Cwpan Ceredigion - Llanilar 2 v 1 Bont (after extra-time)
A spirited Llanilar display saw them overcome Bont in an evenly contested game, to progress to the Third round of the Cwpan Ceredigion.
In blustery conditions, Llanilar started the game in a lively manner without creating any clear cut chances, until the 20th minute that is. After good work from the intelligent Enzo Macarenelli, he passed to Wyre Jones who slotted the ball across the box where Rhys Morgan gave the Bont Keeper no chance with a low strike which found the bottom corner of the net.
This seemed to spur Bont into action and 10 minutes later a free kick taken by Michael Lowe from the right hand side of Llanilar’s Box was expertly driven in and the unmarked Owen Schiavone made no mistake with a powerful header from 7 yards out.
Llanilar would have normally felt dejected after conceding such a soft goal but they seem to be made of sterner stuff these days and it was the Bont keeper who was the busiest of the two custodians in the remaining 15 minutes of the half.
There was very little goalmouth action during the second half with both defences on top, the only half chances coming from set plays. The Bont defence was extremely well marshalled by the vociferous Warren Sedgewick, who went close to scoring from a set piece, narrowly heading over after beating Llanilar keeper Nathan Bennett to the ball.
Llanilar’s man of the match Carwyn Henson nullified the dangerous Michael Lowe and his defensive partner Dylan Davies won most of the aerial battles, together snuffing out any momentum Bont looked to build. Carwyn also went close in the last notable action of normal time when his long range free kick was well saved by the Bont keeper.
Extra time was a pretty drab affair and the match looked destined to go to a penalty shootout until Llanilar won a corner with 2 minutes to go which found Gary Williams on the edge of the box who expertly guided the ball into the net to give Llanilar a hard earned win against an extremely well organised Bont side. |
